Kansas State University (K-State) is accepting applications for an Archaeologist (Research Assistant) to serve on K-State’s archeology support team at Ft Riley, Kansas. Primary duties include working with a team of two other archaeologists to perform archaeological surveys, site assessments, and site monitoring; assist with curation, classification, and description of recovered remains; and provide support for writing technical reports.

This full-time position does not require travel beyond the Ft. Riley workstation, thus, allows a stable home base in the Manhattan-Ft Riley area. This is also a benefits eligible position including a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, retirement plans, and paid vacation, sick, and holiday leave.

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a related field and have completed a formal archaeological field school or comparable training or experience. Preferred qualifications include having earned a master's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or related field; 24 months of relevant experience with archaeological field work; experience in CRM, and preferably previous experience with archaeology of the Great Plains, Kansas, or the Flint Hills region.

The University NAGPRA Specialist will manage the development and implementation of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act compliance and repatriation program for Western Kentucky University, including the Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology and the Kentucky Museum. The Specialist will represent WKU as the primary contact for the NAGPRA program and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations for NAGPRA-eligible collections curated by the University. This is 12-month, full-time, on-campus staff position with benefits. The position is currently being filled as a temporary one-year position; however, it has the potential for renewal in future years. Salary range is $41,000 – $50,000.

The NAPGRA assistant will be responsible for conducting a full review of the collection objects and accession group potentially connected to Native American tribes and subject to the Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). As part of this review, they will conduct collections-based research including archival research, close examination of objects, and consultation with academic and community experts. They will produce detailed reports for their research and identify which objects or collections require further consultation to determine cultural affiliation. The NAGPRA assistant will use this review to assess the museum’s history of communications with Tribes and will be responsible for reaching out to Tribal representatives to reopen or initiate consultations as needed. Working with the museum director, they will draft updated or new NAGPRA summaries, respond to requisitions for additional information, provide images or videos of collections, and assist with in-person collection visits as needed. The NAGPRA assistant may also assist with review of repatriation requests and drafting of Notice of Intent to Repatriate.

Successful applicants must demonstrate knowledge of NAGPRA regulations and have experience working in museum collections. Experience investigating museum collection histories and addressing NAGPRA compliance issues preferred. Applicants will be assessed by their ability to manage projects, demonstration of skills conducting collection-based research, ability to work with databases and efficiently and accurately manage data, and demonstration of ability to communicate clearly through writing. Applicants are expected to demonstrate academic integrity and comply with professional ethical guidelines. The researcher will facilitate access to collections and data for ISAS archaeologists and assist in overseeing, organizing, accessioning and supervising the processing, documentation and storage of accessioned materials, written and digital documents, and photographic data. This includes a research component. The candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field. Candidates with a Ph.D. in Museum Studies or Library and Information Sciences with an MA in Anthropology or Archaeology, will also be considered.

The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated knowledge of relational database use and management in a museum or collections management setting. ISAS is seeking an Assistant or Associate Research Scientist, Environmental Archaeologist (assistant or associate level is dependent on qualifications) to develop, plan, conduct, direct, and participate in specialized research programs of significance for climate and environmental-focused archaeological/anthropological research. This position is based in Champaign, Illinois.

Responsibilities, which will vary depending on position level:

Provide problem-oriented geo-archaeological, sedimentological, hydrological, and/or bio-chemical expertise that complements current and future ISAS research in the North American Midwest focused on landscapes, long-term cultural and climate change, agricultural development, and migration.
Identify relevant research needs and project opportunities.
Develop proposals for external funding and secure funding to support independent research.
Serve as principal investigator, lead research projects, and perform tasks in that capacity including management of grant funding and efficient production of project, grant, or contract reports and deliverables.
Collaborate with survey scientists, University of Illinois faculty, and external colleagues to provide integrated interpretations and applications to existing and new research programs.
Prepare internal reports, reports to sponsoring agencies, and scientific reports for publication in Survey publications.
Publish the results of original research in high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific journals and other outlets that have a rigorous review process.
Interact extensively with land managers, stakeholders, and the public.
Provide authoritative and current information on the results of research projects for the public, other scientists, industry, and/or governmental agencies, and effectively communicate research results through writing and public speaking.
Supervise and lead staff to achieve success and foster a culture of innovation and high-level performance at both the individual and organizational levels. For direct reporting staff, this also includes task assignment, scheduling, ongoing performance monitoring and evaluation, career/position mentoring, and leave/travel approval.
Ensure the safety of staff and equipment.
Contribute in the areas of education, outreach, and/or other service to the Survey, PRI, the University of Illinois, and the state of Illinois.
Mentor graduate students within the University of Illinois and/or other regional universities.
Enhance the reputation of the Survey and PRI at the state and national level.
Actively participate in professional societies and associations.
Attend scientific conferences and sponsor-led work groups as a technical expert and present papers and results.
Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.
Perform other duties as needed in order to further the mission and goals of PRI.

Assistant Research Scientist qualifications: Required: Ph.D. in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field with a geoarchaeological or biochemical specialization. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Experience in academic research environment. Experience administering and conducting field and laboratory research in the Americas. Supervisory and/or team leadership experience. Ability to establish a research program which includes both independent and collaborative research projects. Potential to effectively acquire and manage project funds and resources. Capacity to effectively manage research as a principal investigator and effectively supervise and mentor associated personnel. Early career track record for publishing in high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific journals. Effective communication, personal relations, organizational, and leadership skills. Associate Research Scientist qualifications: Required: Ph.D. in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field with a geoarchaeological or biochemical specialization. At least five years' experience in specialized area of research. Experience in academic research environment. Experience administering and conducting field and laboratory research in the Americas. Has a sustained progression of professional development that includes publishing research findings in high-quality peer-reviewed scientific journals, external funding, mentorship, leadership and service. This individual will conduct analysis of historic materials from archaeological sites including all aspects of historic sample collection, identification, analysis, archaeological interpretation, and curation.

Associated duties will include the identification and recordation of American and European material remains from archaeological sites, including the quantification of results and preparation of appropriate tables, analysis and interpretation of the archaeological significance of the historic material remains, and the preparation of historic material analysis reports as appropriate. Work collaboratively in devising and maintaining a standard historic material classification-recording scheme, as well as collaborate with specific researchers in adjusting the scheme to suit their needs. Complete short reports on historic materials, covering all aspects of material culture, feature analysis, site stratigraphy, interpretation, and site significance for sites that do not require formal reports. Execute holistic spatial analysis incorporating vertical and horizontal distribution of diagnostic historic material artifacts, material and feature clustering, soil deposition and erosion, feature super-positioning, and intra-site artifact mends to delineate site cultural components. Maintain electronic and handwritten historic material laboratory databases, including but not limited to a historic material lab project-tracking database, a material comparative collection database, an artifact type comparative collection database, and individual site assemblage historic material analysis data. Perform reviews of the material assemblages and offer recommendations for all of the historic sites encountered during the surveys conducted by the Central Illinois Field Station (CIFS). This review includes checking material identifications, assigning date range estimates for the site components, checking site locations against historic maps and other resources, and make recommendations for National Register of Historic Places eligibility. Track samples through the analytic process by inventorying the movement of samples through the laboratory, maintaining electronic logs of individual site samples, and ensuring the analyzed samples are curated properly. Analyst coordinates with archaeological assistants to maintain and develop the Surveys historic material comparative collection and relevant reference material in order to facilitate specimen identification and interpretation, within the larger context of historic cultural manifestations recognized in the Eastern United States. Participates in Survey outreach activities for the general public, avocational societies, and school groups and records and maintains artifact data collected from avocational collectors. Acts as liaison, as appropriate, with other historic material specialists in the region. Participates in regional conferences and organizations; prepares presentations and articles on research activities and interests.

The successful candidate should have a B.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology or closely related field, plus 3 years’ experience in conducting historic material investigations and analysis of historic sites in the Eastern United States cultural area. Detailed familiarity with the historical resources of Illinois, temporal and culturally diagnostic historic materials, and production technology and history. Demonstrated ability to complete historic material projects and reports in a timely and competent manner. Basic familiarity with all classes of material culture, feature types and functions, and site formation processes is also required. Basic familiarity with computer word processing, graphic and database programs.

The Field Museum plans to open a new permanent exhibition on Native North America that will draw on the comprehensive North American collections at the Museum. It will directly incorporate the voices of Native Americans through collaboration and will highlight the cultural and historical experiences of diverse communities of Native Americans. By providing a broader socio-historical context, the exhibition will illustrate diverse cultural traditions, practices, and histories of the first peoples of North America as well as provide access to contemporary issues and creativity within Native communities.

As part of this exhibition, the Museum will hire one Assistant Collections Manager and two Collections Assistants. These are full-time (35-hours per week), term positions that will run until June 2021. The individuals in these positions will participate in the deinstallation of the current Native North American exhibition hall as well as in the development and preparation of the new exhibition. They will work closely with Anthropology collections and conservation staff to assist with object housing, photography, movement and tracking, as well as data management. This senior-level Principal Investigator position that requires supervisory experience in conducting Phase I surveys, Phase II evaluations, and Phase III data recoveries. Associated duties will include facilitating the flow of the work process for IDOT Statewide survey projects from receipt of the Environmental Survey Request (ESR) to completion and submittal of the Archaeological Survey Short Report (ASSR) and the Archaeological Testing Survey Report (ATSR). Coordinate with ISAS Data Management Team leadership to maintain and update ISAS Project Database for Statewide Survey along with related project files and information. Accurately evaluate relevant information and post survey requests, completed ASSRs, ATSRs, and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) reviews on the Project Notification System (PNS) and ensure compliance with standing agreements. Update and maintain list of Programmatic Agreements and Memorandums of Agreement on ISAS website. Prepare and distribute reports on the status of outstanding projects as needed. Maintain ASSR and ATSR files, digital and paper. Assist in the production and submission of reports. Contribute to the production of the annual report of ISAS projects and activities. Engage in field projects as necessary. Participate in public outreach that highlights ISAS activities.

The successful candidate must have a B.A. in Anthropology, or closely related field. Concentration in archaeology preferred. Minimum of two years of experience in carrying out Phase I and II archaeological field projects in a Midwestern context. This individual will work with the Field Station Coordinator and other staff in overseeing all aspects of GIS and other spatial data use for the American Bottom Field Station (ABFS), a unit of the Illinois State Archaeological Survey.

Associated duties will include training staff in the use of GIS and geospatial data manipulation, 2D and 3D modeling, advanced data layer merging, the use of map algebra or buffering, working with spatial databases, mapping, cartography, data collections/creation and management. This also includes training staff in best practices, methodology, troubleshooting; providing guidance in the use of data; and providing instruction in the technical aspects of equipment and software use. The Archaeological GIS Specialist will work with research staff to provide direction and feedback on the use of GIS data to assist in the completion of assigned projects and tasks in an accurate and timely manner. Will communicate with management and contractors for the purpose of coordinating and administering the use of GIS projects and data into archaeological research. Will supervise subordinate staff, which includes task assignments, ongoing performance monitoring and evaluation, career/position mentoring, and leave/ travel approval. The Archaeological GIS Specialist will also administer field mapping hardware/software (GPS data collectors and electronic survey equipment/total station). Collect field data using GPS and total station equipment. Administer hardware including workstations, plotter/printers, larger format scanner, and digitizers related to GIS and cartography. Will also administer and maintain GIS and other mapping software for the ISAS American Bottom Field Station.

Associated duties will include all aspects of lithic sample collection, identification, analysis, archaeological interpretation, report preparation, and curation.

The Lithic Analyst will perform the identification and recordation of chipped, groundstone, and mineral remains from archaeological sites, including the quantification of results and preparation of appropriate tables, analysis and interpretation of the archaeological significance of the lithic remains, and the preparation of lithic analysis reports as appropriate. Execute holistic spatial analysis incorporating vertical and horizontal distribution of diagnostic lithic artifacts. NIFS conducts archaeological survey and excavation work in advance of Illinois Department of Transportation projects located within Illinois’ 18 northernmost counties. Under separate contract, NIFS also conducts archaeological surveys within the Forest Preserves of Cook County, IL.

We would like to add several full time supervisory level employees to our current staff. Supervisory staff will be initially hired as University of Illinois Academic Hourly employees, with the potential for advancement to Civil Service. The typical workweek comprises 4 10-hour days – Monday through Thursday, 7am to 5pm. Crews meet at the Elgin office, and travel to and from project areas each day in University vehicles. Occasionally, long-term projects located a few hours from the Elgin office will require overnight stays; hotel costs and per diem are provided in these instances. The successful candidate must hold, at a minimum, a B.A. or B.S. degree. The Director of The Field Museum’s Collections Center (the Gantz Family Collections Center) will expand and shape the role that these collections play in global efforts to explore the past, understand the present, and ensure a future rich with biological and cultural diversity. The Director focuses the strategic growth of the collections, broadening their relevance and increasing their accessibility. This leadership position provides general oversight for the Museum's holdings of close to 30 million specimens and objects, in addition to the library and archive collections. The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, is seeking a Visiting Historic Architectural Compliance Specialist to be stationed at its central offices in Champaign, Illinois. This individual will document, research, and evaluate historic resources and architectural resources (historic sites, buildings, districts, and bridges) for Illinois transportation projects in accordance with the rules and regulations of the National Historic Preservation Act (16 U.S.C. 470) and its implementing regulations (36 CFR 61, Appendix A) and the Illinois State Agency Historic Resources Preservation Act (20 ILCS 3420) and the guidelines of the National Register of Historic Places.

The major duties and responsibilities of this individual include conducting field surveys and archival research on Federal-aid and State-aid transportation projects to identify and document historic resources (historic sites, districts, buildings, bridges or structures), to conduct historical research on properties, to identify and evaluate those eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, to assess effects of the proposed transportation projects to those resources, to prepare documentation concerning such historic and architectural resources and effects to them in accordance with various State and Federal environmental laws and regulations, and to recommend mitigation alternatives for adversely affected resources. Coordinate findings with IDOT to ensure historic property matters are incorporated into the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of transportation facilities. Serve as an information source for IDOT and other State and Federal agencies and other parties concerning historic resources of the state. Work with IDOT to develop memoranda of agreement and/or programmatic agreements for agreed upon mitigation measures. Conduct public engagement activities that highlight the historic preservation practices of IDOT, ISAS, and Prairie Research Institute (PRI). Occasional out-of-town projects/overnight travel are required for this position. Candidates must have a Master’s degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Architecture, or Historic Architecture or closely related field.

Successful candidates must have demonstrated architectural field survey experience such as but not limited to large-scale surveys of corridors, cities, municipalities, and rural areas and experience in interpreting and applying historic preservation and/or environmental laws such as the National Historic Preservation Act. Conduct analysis of plant remains from archaeological sites including all aspects of archaeobotanical sample collection, identification, analysis, archaeological interpretation, report preparation, and curation.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
Perform the identification and recordation of carbonized plant remains from archaeological sites, including the quantification of results and preparation of appropriate tables, the analysis and interpretation of the archaeological significance of the archaeobotanical remains, and the preparation of archaeobotanical reports as appropriate. Maintain electronic and handwritten archaeobotanical laboratory databases, including, but not limited to the floatation sample number log, the radiocarbon date results database, and the Laboratory Tracking Form. Track samples through the analytic process by inventorying the movement of samples through the laboratory, maintain electronic logs of individual site samples, and ensure the analyzed floatation samples are curated properly. Undertake general laboratory duties, such as order supplies, organize storage shelves, help to maintain comparative collections, and sample cleaning and maintenance as needed. Supervise and/or train other staff members, archaeological assistants, lab technicians, and students in processing data and conducting analytical procedures and techniques.

Position Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Minimum B.A., M.A. preferred, in Anthropology or related discipline with 3 years experience in archaeobotany working with a qualified paleoethnobotanist.

Experience: Must have experience in identifying and quantifying archaeobotanical data sets, and a demonstrated ability to complete archaeobotanical projects and reports in a timely and competent manner. Basic familiarity with computer word-processing, graphic, and database programs required. Must have a basic familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeological culture history and Illinois archaeological culture history. Knowledge of midwestern plant communities and ecology, plant anatomy, taxonomy, paleoecology, and native plant utilization is useful.
