The Illinois Archaeological Survey is pleased to announce two grant opportunities for 2026! A Research Grant and a Native American Scholarship Award for up to $2000 each are now available to apply for. These awards are intended to promote the documentation, interpretion, and preservation of the archaeological resources of the State, to disseminate information about the cultural heritage of Illinois, and to encourage professional development, collaborative research, and scholarship.

The application deadline for the research grant is May 1st and the Native American Scholarship Grant is opened ended, or until awarded. These grants are open to anyone to apply. We are sad to announce the passing of John Walthall 1945-2025

JOHN ALLEN WALTHALL, 79 years old, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025 in Springfield, Illinois. John is survived by the love of his life and wife of 51 years, Nina Rowe Walthall, his son David Walthall, his former daughter-in-law Erin Goldsmith, his two grandsons Rhys and Brooks Walthall, his sister Mary Flemming (Tom), and many loving family members and friends.

John, an archaeologist, was born on January 23, 1946, in Birmingham, Alabama. His parents were John Thomas and Kathryn Clayton Walthall. John graduated from the University of Alabama in 1968. His first field experience took place in the summer of 1966 when he worked on an archaeological dig in the Buttahatchie Valley of northwestern Alabama, directed by Professor David L. DeJarnette. He earned an M.A. or M.S. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1970, and his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1973. While in graduate school, John participated in archaeological fieldwork in the central Mississippi Valley, the southern Appalachian Mountains, the upper Great Lakes, Mobile Bay, southwestern France, and the valley of Mexico.

He served as a professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa for several years. Yes, he did meet and shake hands with Bear Bryant. While there, he authored the book, "Prehistoric Indians of the Southeast" (University of Alabama Press, 1980, paperback edition, 1990), which became a standard reference for regional archaeologists and students.

In 1977, John became the first Chief Archaeologist for the joint Illinois Department of Transportation / University of Illinois Cultural Resources Program. He served in this role for 34 years, retiring in January 2012. During this period, he managed some of North America's most significant archaeological projects, including several major excavations at and around the Cahokia Mounds site. This work culminated in the 2008-2016 excavations conducted before constructing a new bridge spanning the Mississippi River into St. Louis (named the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge). Over 1,500 Cahokia-related houses were discovered during this project.

This excavation project, carried out in collaboration with the Osage Nation, revealed that Cahokia was not merely a ceremonial center, as previously believed, but was once a vast prehistoric city between AD 1,000 and 1,300. During that period, it was more significant than contemporary London. This discovery was recognized as one of the world's most important archaeological projects and received the 2016 Shanghai Archaeology Forum International Field Discovery Award.

During his 50-year career in archaeology, John Walthall authored and edited a dozen books on the Archaeology of Prehistoric America, French Colonial Illinois, and the American Frontier, as well as approximately 50 journal articles and book chapters (see his publications page at: https://il.academia.edu/JohnWalthall).

He served as an adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, for more than 20 years. He was a research archaeologist at the Illinois State Museum for much of that time. In a Journal of Illinois Archaeology volume honoring John on his retirement, Kenneth B. Farnsworth of the Illinois State Archaeological Survey stated that “During the past 30 years, no one has done more than John Walthall to shape, define, and contribute to new fundamental discoveries and interpretations in Illinois archaeology.” At the 2008 annual conference in Vancouver, B.C., the Society for American Archaeology awarded John Walthall a Lifetime Achievement Award for his career accomplishments.

The 69th Meeting of the Illinois Archaeological Survey will be held in person and hosted by Illinois State University in Bloomington, Illinois on September 12-13, 2025. The meeting’s events include an opening night reception with hors d' oerves on Friday from 5-7pm in the Lido Lounge at the Chateau Hotel and Conference Center followed by the IAS Business Meeting and paper/poster session on Saturday in the Conference Center Auditorium. Please submit your paper or poster title and abstract (<200 words) to Logan Miller at glmill1@ilstu.edu. Paper length should be approximately 15 minutes. The deadline for submissions is Monday September 8, 2025.

A block of rooms at the Chateau (309-662-2020) has been reserved for $99/night under the Illinois Archaeological Survey. These rooms will be reserved until August 15.

Survey Guideline changes

As of March 1, the SHPO has implemented the following changes to the Phase I survey guidelines including:

an increase in minimum surface visibility of 40% due to no-till agricultural practices and 5m survey interval.

At least one shovel test is to be placed in each site located to provide information on potential integrity. Photographs of representative shovel test profiles (with scale) are to be included.

Shovel testing required on all parcels with less than 40% surface visibility.

Pedestrian survey in standing corn is now at every other row due to limited peripheral visibility.

No survey in mature beans.

Photos of surface conditions within project area from multiple scales and reference points keyed to a map are now required.

Additional changes to come are still under discussion and may include:

Supplemental shovel testing for all project areas in the near future. Details regarding number per acre and under which conditions are still being discussed.

Reminder! Submissions for the Illinois Archaeological Survey (IAS) Jeanette Stephens Student Paper Award are due August 1. The Jeanette Stephens Award recognizes strong scholarship on topics concerning the archaeology of Illinois. Topics can include (but are not limited to) theoretical perspectives, artifact analyses, and methodological applications and research should concern sites in Illinois OR sites outside of Illinois that contribute to the interpretation of Illinois archaeology. There are separate competitions for graduate students and undergraduate students, and students can win up to $500! Students do not have to be members of the IAS, nor do they need to attend the IAS meeting to win, so anyone, anywhere can submit!

If you had students who worked on projects related to Illinois archaeology this year, please encourage them to submit! We accept submissions from anyone who is/was a student between Aug 1, 2022 and Aug 1, 2024. Chip-A Canoe Project Summer 2023!

The 'Chip-A-Canoe' project with Larry Kinsella, Michelle Berg, and the McCully Heritage Project will be coming up this summer. Here is the original announcement.

'We are officially announcing our CHIP-A-CANOE project. The object of this project is to complete and document the construction of a dugout canoe using only stone-age tools. CHIP-A-CANOE is Larry Kinsella's dream project and the culmination of years of practice in experimental archeology of ground stone technology. The tree used for the canoe will be cut down using stone axes, adzes and celts only. And once the log is cut, the canoe will be built, again using only stone tools. The entire project will be documented through video and photographs. Each stone tool used will be cataloged and photographed, with a record of the maker of the tool.

McCully Heritage Project is providing the space, campsites, and lodging for the Chip-A-Canoe project, along with project support in any way we can. Funds from this campaign will be used for transporting the log to the McCully Heritage Project, funding the necessary insurance, and digital and photographic documentation of the project. Leftover funds once the project is complete will go toward completing an exhibit for the museum in Kampsville.

RIP Jim Skibo - Jan 7, 1960- April 14, 2023

We are mourning the loss of our incredible colleague and Wisconsin’s State Archaeologist, Dr. James Skibo, or as we knew him, Jim.

Jim passed away on April 14, 2023, after being recovered from Lake Mendota while on a routine work-up dive preparing for the maritime archaeology season. Jim was a certified diver and qualified for the depth of the dive as well as the equipment being used.

Jim is highly regarded for his archaeological work in the Great Lakes region and beyond, and we were honored to have him join the Wisconsin Historical Society in July of 2021. In this role, he oversaw the state’s 36,000 archaeological sites and made great contributions to our mission, to our team and to advancing archaeological research in our state. Notably, his department worked in coordination with Wisconsin’s Native Nations on the historic recovery of two canoes – one 1,200 years old (800 A.D.) and the second 3,000 years old (1,000 B.C) – recovered in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Jim was a champion, leader and mentor for his team, yet always eager to learn from those around him. He was looking forward to getting back in the water with his colleagues this spring to further explore the site of the historic canoe recoveries, as he knew there are many stories yet to be shared.

Jim’s passion and enthusiasm reverberated through the halls of our organization and throughout the state. An explorer at heart, Jim traveled Wisconsin on a mission to democratize archaeology, and he loved to tell the stories of the past through the lens of the archaeological record left behind. He truly was the “People’s Archaeologist,” as he often referred to himself. His passion for the field and for the importance of uncovering, preserving and sharing history was inspirational to us all and he will be deeply missed by so many.

Prior to joining the Society, Jim was named emeritus distinguished professor of anthropology and served as department chair at Illinois State University, where he worked for 27 years. He authored and edited 11 books and reviewed dozens of peer articles on pottery, archaeological theory, and the archaeology of the Great Lakes. He also co-edited the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory for 17 years.

Jim valued his time spent working alongside William A. Longacre on the Kalinga Ethnoarchaeological Project, one of the longest-running ethnoarchaeological projects ever undertaken with research focused on pottery producers in the northern Luzon region of the Philippines. He also directed the Grand Island Archaeological Research Program since 2000 and in 2012 was presented with the Excellence in Archaeological Analysis award by the Society for American Archaeology.

We are keeping Jim’s wife, Becky, and their children, Matt and Sadie, in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time. For those looking for a way to honor Jim, his family suggests giving back to the earth that he loved and learned from.

Mary McCorvie wins the prestigious SHA 'MACK' Award for public outreach

We have just been notified that Mary McCorvie (retired Heritage Program Manager of the Shawnee National Forest) and Illinois Archaeological Survey (IAS) member has won this year's "Mack" award from the Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA) for her decades worth of work with thousands of underprivileged youth, family descendants, historic black college (HBC) students at the Miller Grove site, a pre-Civil War freed slave community in Pope County, Illinois. The Mack award is awarded each year to archaeologists who exhibit "outstanding best practices in community collaboration, engagement, and outreach in their historical archaeology and heritage preservation work". The SHA is going to present her with the award next month at the 2023 SHA annual meetings in Lisbon, Portugal. Below is a photo of Abby Miller, a daughter of one of the founders, and her daughters ca. 1910. Following are photos of African American kids and their mom who helped in the investigations; the SIUC field school at Miller Grove; and some of the artifacts of daily life recovered from Miller Grove.

The National NAGPRA Program is reaching out to you concerning the recently published proposed rule to amend the NAGPRA implementing regulations at 43 CFR Part 10 (87 FR 63202, Oct. 18, 2022). The Department is committed to proactively working with stakeholders, including museum and scientific organizations, to obtain feedback on topics in the revised regulations.

Could you please share this message with your membership and encourage them to provide written comment on the proposed rule, generally, and on the following specific topics (taken from Section VI. Public Engagement and Request for Comments, 87 FR 63232-63233):

One of the goals of the proposed regulatory revisions is to improve efficiency by streamlining requirements, clarify timelines and terms, reducing ambiguity, and improving efficiency in the systematic process for disposition and repatriation. Has this goal been achieved?
Under the proposed regulatory revisions, within two years of the effective date of the rule, museums would be required to update inventories for any human remains and associated funerary objects previously included in an inventory but not published in a notice of inventory completion. Based on information available to it, a museum would be required to initiate consultation, consult with requesting parties, determine if any known lineal descendant, or culturally or geographically affiliated Indian Tribe can be ascertained, and if so, publish notices of inventory completion within six months of updating the inventory.

The Department anticipates that the human remains of 117,000 Native American individuals currently unable to be repatriated would become available for repatriation within two and a half years of the effective date of a final rule, a substantial increase from the 84,000 individuals repatriated in the almost 32 years since the passage of NAGPRA. At this time, the Department is not aware of any capacity and resource limitations that would prevent museums from completing the new requirement to update inventories, engage in consultation, and publish notices following the effective date of a final rule. The Department requests feedback from museums on how, if at all, the proposed regulatory revision could impact its capacity and resources to accomplish this goal.

Sunday September 12th, Lithic Use-Wear Evidence of Middle Woodland Pearl/Shell Bead Production at the Crane Site, Greene County, Illinois

Lithic use-wear analysis of chipped stone blades and drills from the Middle Woodland period Crane site offers a view into pearl/shell bead production that is unequaled in eastern North America. Crane is a Middle Woodland residential site in the Macoupin Creek Valley. Surface collections and excavations in 1970s provided an in depth look at the site structure of this residential camp. Over 1,500 chipped stone blades, many of which were retouched into drills, were recovered during these investigations. Microscopic use-wear analysis of 308 blades and 75 drills indicate an emphasis on pearl/shell bead manufacturing at the site. These beads had spiritual, social, and economic value for groups participating in the Hopewell Interaction Spheres. As such, tens of thousands of pearl/shell beads have been recovered from Middle Woodland mounds across the Eastern Woodlands yet no site contained evidence for the intensive manufacture of pearl/shell beads until now.

The Anthropology PhD program at the University of Notre Dame is now accepting applications for the 2020-21 cycle. The department seeks to involve graduate students in integrative anthropology, including engagement with diverse anthropological and interdisciplinary perspectives, integration of theory and application, and integration of teaching, research, and ethics.

Full funding is offered including tuition, stipend, health insurance, as well as Summer travel and research funds for all students. The application deadline is December 1, 2020. GRE test scores are NOT required as part of the application process.

The Anthropology Department has a commitment to encourage and facilitate the education of students of color and students from underrepresented groups who can continue to add robust and important perspectives to the discipline. They are interested in students who want to make a difference.

RIP Robert "Bob" Monroe - 1953-2020

Bob worked for ISAS until his retirement in 2017. He was an amazing archaeologist. who shared his passion for archaeology with everyone he came in contact with. An unforgettable colleague who made valuable contributions to Illinois Archaeology. He will be missed by many friends and colleagues.

Earlier this year, the University of Illinois established a NAGPRA Office and hired Krystiana Krupa as the NAGPRA Officer in order to show their commitment to NAGPRA and concerns of Tribal Nations. Effective September 15, 2020, the University implemented a moratorium on research, teaching, display, imaging, and circulation of human remains and cultural items that are potentially subject to NAGPRA at the University. It is a pleasure to announce the online posting of a set of videos that present research on the topics of personhood and soul-like essences as conceived by pre- and post-contact Indians of the Eastern Woodlands and as used ritually and strategically by them in their lives.

The videos include nine researchers’ and two discussants’ presentations written for a symposium for the 85th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology, Austin, Texas, April 23, 2020. When the meetings were canceled, we constructed the videos as an alternative means of sharing our ideas with the profession.

The videos have applicability to subjects beyond Eastern Woodland Indians archaeology and ethnography. They will be of interest to those who study the archaeology and ethnography of New World indigenous peoples, the archaeology of religion, mortuary archaeology, bioarchaeology, identity, folklore, performance, comparative religion, and the “ontological turn” movement in archaeology. Cahokia Mounds is taking applications for six seasonal positions until 5-1-2020. These will be three maintenance/janitorial staff and three interpretive staff. Employment will begin as soon our site re-opens and continue into November. These are full-time positions. The interpretive schedules will be 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Wednesday - Sunday. The maintenance positions will be Mon – Friday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm, with one shift of Wed – Sunday 7:00 am – 3:00 pm. Pay is 9.25 per hour now and will increase with the next State increase occurring by July 1 to $10 per hour. Each year, the IAS website lists field schools in Illinois. Please send your 2020 field school information to Joe Galloy (webmaster@ilarchsurv.org). The new field school page will be posted in early February 2020, and it will be updated as new contributions come in. The field school information will also be disseminated via Twitter and Facebook after it is posted on the IAS website. This is the required information:

(1) Institution offering the field school, (2) Name and/or subject of field school, (3) Location, (4) Start and end dates, (5) Brochure, flier, and/or website link, if available, (6) Contact person's name and email address (plus phone number, if desired), and (7) One photo, if available. Passing of Dr. James Stoltman

It is with sadness we report the passing of Dr. James Stoltman in Madison, Wisconsin on Wednesday. Dr. Stoltman, an Emeritus Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, was a long-time contributor to the archaeology of the Eastern Woodlands who trained many of the current generation of archeologists practicing in the Midwest.

He took students to the field regularly for decades to Prairie du Chien, at the Fred Edwards site, the Bass site, and others. In the last months before he died, he submitted articles for publication in the Wisconsin Archeologist (Brisbois House excavations) as well as contributions to a book. He will be missed.

Dr. Stoltman's funeral will be next Tuesday September 17th at 11:00 at Cress Funeral Home in Middleton. The address is 6021 University Ave, Madison, Wisconsin 53705.

The 63rd Annual Meeting of the Illinois Archaeological Survey will be held at the Interpretive Center of the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville, Illinois, on September 6 and 7, 2019. An updated schedule of the meeting and presentations is set out below, along with the preliminary program and abstracts. Advance registration is now closed. You may register on site, and can also pay the $5.00 registration fee for the September 6 reception on site.

On September 6 at 6:30pm, join us at the Interpretive Center for the conference reception, with complementary barbecue, beer, and other beverages, sides, and desserts. Enjoy an augmented reality demonstration presented by the Illinois State Archaeological Survey based on recent research at the Emerald Acropolis. Also hear information from Heartlands Conservancy regarding recent efforts to make Cahokia a National Park.

- Charles J. Bareis Distinguished Service Award

This award honors those individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to Illinois archaeology and/or the Illinois Archaeological Survey.

- The Leonard W. Blake Distinguished Amateur Award

The Blake award is named in honor of its first recipient. It recognizes avocational archaeologists who have made significant contributions to Illinois archaeology and who have supported the goals and methodologies of professional archaeology.

- The Illinois Archaeology Career Achievement Award

This award honors professional archaeologists for outstanding career accomplishments and contributions to our understanding of Illinois prehistory and history.

- The IAS Memorial Service Award

This award honors the achievements of Illinois archaeologists whose careers have been cut short by fatal illness or accident.

Prehistory on the Prairie III: Excavations at the Middle Grant Creek Site

Join us on the prairie again this year as we explore the cusp of prehistory at the Middle Grant Creek site! Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie’s mission is the restoration and preservation of indigenous prairieland – a now rare type of ecosystem – that nearly disappeared after 200 years of Euro-American land use in the area. As part of that effort, ongoing archaeological research is being done to identify both prehistoric and historic sites, cultures, and land-use patterns. One such site, identified in 2002, is the Middle Grant Creek Site. The site is an Oneota Culture (ca. A.D. 1150-1700) resource extraction and utilization site, dating to the Huber Phase (ca. A.D. 1600). Phase II testing in 2006 determined that it was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and, since 2016, Professor Mark Schurr and Dr. Madeleine McLeester of the University of Notre Dame have been working on excavations to further investigate the site. We invite you to come out to the Midewin and work side-by-side with these professionals as they excavate the site’s deep storage pits, which, so far, have yielded unique pottery, animal bones, a shell from Florida, projectile points, painted mussel shells, and more! You will get the chance to excavate, screen, and record the site, and help us find evidence of how Huber people lived and interacted with their environment. For more information:

The final program for the Illinois Archaeological Survey Conference of presentations on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, is available online.

Paper and poster presentations, our Annual Business Meeting, and Awards ceremony, convene at the Hilton Garden Inn Conference Center, 1501 S. Neill St., Champaign. We meet in the combined, main ballrooms at the front of the Conference Center. Presentations include current research and specialized topics in prehistoric and historical archaeology.

As the Illinois Archaeology Awareness initiative observes: “People have lived in Illinois for over 10,000 years, but only a portion of that history is known from historic documents. Celebrate some of the significant archaeological discoveries and projects that have aided in reconstructing and preserving the history of Illinois since it became a state in 1818.” Paper presentations are 15 minutes in length. Forensic Anthropology Field School - Utica College

Utica College’s 14^th annual Forensic Anthropology Field School program and six-credit course will take place in Albania, Greece, and Romania from May 16 to June 8, 2017 (www.utica.edu/butrint). Over 150 students from more than 65 US and international schools have participated in the program since 2004. No previous experience with human skeletal remains is needed and students are not required to enroll in the course to participate. The IAAA Permanent Fund has been in existence since 2000 and has awarded annual research assistance grants since 2004. These grants are open to avocational, professional, student, and educational groups for projects conducted within the state of Illinois. In 2017, the IAAA Permanent Fund will award two $400 grants. Our IAAM theme issue will again be a joint effort of the Illinois Association for Advancement of Archaeology (IAAA) and the Illinois Archaeological Survey (IAS). We plan a full-color issue that will feature articles related why and how we use artifact typology to interpret the past.

Archaeologists organize artifacts into types based on the category of material (such as stone, clay, or bone), possible function or functions based on morphology and type of modification. Once critical for determining chronological sequences, artifact types, along with their associated contexts provide insights into the technological and social realm of past societies. How have recent studies of detailed material composition, use wear, and deposition context broadened our view of artifact interpretation? What is the role of experimental archaeology in altering previous classifications? What kinds of artifacts, once overlooked, are now analyzed to provide new information? How do we interpret unexpected or unusual artifacts that do not fit in with our preconceived notions?

For the 2016 IAAM edition Illinois Antiquity, we seek articles that are related to Illinois artifact studies. Articles for this issue may be short (1000 words or fewer), or longer (2500 words), and can be as brief as an illustration of a single artifact with accompanying description, or longer articles written in a non-technical style. Our goal is to make the issue more like a magazine, widely accessible to many readers, with illustrations in the form of photos or figures. Detailed tables, lists of citations, or recommended readings will be placed on the IAAA web site as a companion to the issue. Illinois Antiquity authors’ guidelines may be found at http://www.museum.state.il.us/iaaa/author.htm. To allow time for the issue to be printed before September, the deadline for articles is July 31, 2016.

ISAS 2015 Annual Report is Now Available

ISAS's 2015 Annual Report was just released. It documents ISAS's discoveries and research over the last year. Highlights include:

• Maize only arrives in Illinois at A.D. 900—not A.D. 200 as previously thought;
• Cahokia, North America’s rst city, was comprised of one-third immigrants;
• The East St. Louis site participated in early and extensive trade in pottery vessels and stone tools, housed specialized workshops, and ended in destruction by re;

• 2000-year old native village discovered under modern-day Meredosia; and • Reanalysis identi es a unique bob kitten burial from 2000 years ago.

The Illinois State Archaeological Survey has several announcements to start off the new year.

ISAS's NEW STAFF

Clare Tolme has joined the Northern Illinois Field Station as a Senior Research Archaeologist. Clare’s career as an archaeologist began in England. She has worked on Middle and Upper Paleolithic sites in France, on Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon and Mediaeval sites in England and on everything from PaleoIndian to Industrial sites in the U.S. The majority of her field experience has been in the Midwest. Her particular areas of expertise are faunal analysis, and historic archaeology. Clare’s interests lie in subsistence and landscape use, particularly how prehistoric people adapted to changes in their environment and how historic landscape organization changed over time.

Megan Gilbert joined the Central Offices as a Visiting Historic Architectural Compliance Specialist on January 4th. Her duties are to develop historic building survey reports for IDOT projects, and to conduct field surveys and archival research for federal and state transportation projects to identify and document historic resources.

Megan Gilbert has a B.S. degree in Architecture (2012) from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and an M.S. degree in Historic Preservation (2014) from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. Megan recently (2014-2015) interned with the City of Jackson, Michigan and the Jackson Historic District Commission and assisted with the survey and documentation of over 300 properties for the “Under the Oaks Historic District.” In 2013/2014, she served as Architectural Historian Consultant for the firm Quinn Evans Architects where she assisted with the research and documentation of the “Mount Pleasant Historic Business District” in Michigan.

Stephen serves as a regional planning representative for Landmarks Illinois, the state’s leading voice for historic preservation.

ISAS has received two international honors for 2015. The Shanghai Archaeological Forum (SAF) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing has named the Illinois State Archaeological Survey’s (ISAS) East St. Louis Archaeological Project as one of the top ten archaeological field projects in the world. The project is being recognized at SAF’s December meeting in China. The Illinois State Archaeological Survey is part of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois.

SAF Field Discovery Awards (Major Archaeological Field-Discoveries)

The SAF Field Discovery Awards are presented for archaeological excavations or surveys that have yielded major discoveries significantly furthering or even altering our knowledge of the human past, locally and/or globally. To be eligible for this award, the nominated work must be a scientific archaeological excavation or survey, legally authorized in the country where it was undertaken. The principal investigator responsible for the nominated work must hold an internationally recognized qualification for archaeological excavation or survey in the country where the nominated work was carried out.

Archaeology Magazine recognized the ‘Bobkitten Buried Like a Human’ as one of the top 10 discoveries of 2015 and is featured in their 2016 January/February issue. Here is the link to the story on their website:

The theme for the 2015 Illinois Archaeology Awareness Month is 'The Future of the Past: Science in Archaeology'. As part of our efforts to inform people about different techniques used by archaeologists (geophysics, PIMA, XRF, isotopes, aDNA, LiDAR, etc) we would like to include brief descriptions of the techniques on the IAAM website and then provide links to webpages that describe the application of the techniques in archaeology. We are asking for contributions to the webpage by anyone who has or is currently using these techniques as part of your research project. This could be a great way to highlight advances in Illinois archaeology in recent years through providing examples of your research efforts.

Survey: SAA "For the Public" Webpages

The Society for American Archaeology (SAA) is surveying professional archaeologists and members of the public involved in archaeology education to learn about their use and knowledge of the existing SAA For the Public Webpages. Information collected will help the SAA update and redesign the webpages to best meet the needs of members and educators interested in archaeological education and outreach.

The survey consists of 13 questions total. If you have not previously visited the For the Public Webpages your feedback is still needed and appreciated. The first two questions ask whether you have used the site. If you respond "yes" to those questions, you will be directed to seven questions asking how you use the current site and your satisfaction levels with various features. The final portion of the survey asks what new aspects of the revised site you would like to see. If you respond "no" to the first two questions, an additional five questions will ask you about your use of public outreach websites in general. The survey is a mix of multiple choice and short open comment fields. Before starting the survey, members are encouraged to visit the For the Public webpages:http://www.saa.org/publicftp/PUBLIC/home/home.html but this is not mandatory. Please allow about 10-15 minutes to take the survey.

SIUE's "This Week in CAS" reports on alumna Kaitlin Roberts's work, which led to her winning the IAS's Jeannette E. Stephens Student Paper Award in 2014 for her work on Middle Woodland period Gehring site ceramics. According to the article, Roberts said that “The ceramic assemblage that I analyzed included pottery very similar to that found in the Illinois River Valley, suggesting that people migrated to this area from the north."

Dr. Mark Lynott passed away on May 29, 2014

Mark was the former manager and Supervisory Archeologist at the Midwest Archeological Center, having retired in 2013 after 34 years of service with the National Park Service (please see the link below that was posted on Inside NPS when Mark retired). He was an amazing individual who made major contributions to the profession that he loved and the preservation of resources managed by the National Park Service. He will be forever missed by his family, friends and colleagues.

St. Louis Public Radio Update: Archaeological Discoveries from the New Mississippi River Bridge

The Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge and Interstate 70 Connector cut through about 7 percent of the East St. Louis Mound Center, an ancient city related to Cahokia Mounds. IDOT's Brad Koldehoff and ISAS's Joe Galloy were interviewed for St Louis on the Air by host Don Marsh.

A Peek at the Past in Western Illinois

Prehistoric and historic period artifacts recovered from construction of Route 336 from Macomb to Quincy are discussed by Rich Fishel of the Illinois State Archaeological Survey on Tri-State Public Radio. Some of the artifacts are now on display at the Western Illinois Museum.

Kathy Lawton Brown, from the Radio Arts Foundation-Saint Louis, recently interviewed Dr. Joseph Galloy, a research coordinator with the Illinois State Archaeological Survey, and Amy Clark, a member of the curatorial staff at the St. Louis Art Museum.

Dr. Galloy briefly discussed the 2008-2012 excavations in the East St. Louis, I-70 Right-of-Way. The area opened revealed a large Mississippian urban settlement dating from AD 1050-1400. This settlement adds to the understanding of the nearby Mississippian settlement of Cahokia and the greater Mississippian occupation of the St. Louis Metropolitan area.

The St. Louis Art Museum has installed a permanent display containing North American prehistoric artwork. This display not only provides dates and identification, it will also provides a context for the use of the artifacts in the daily lives of the prehistoric populations who occupied the St. Louis Metropolitan area. The Exchange Avenue figurine from the East St. Louis excavations will be displayed in this exhibit beginning in Spring 2014. This will be the first time this artifact will be on display for public viewing. A number of other artifacts and flint clay figurines will also be displayed.

Dr. Galloy also highlights the preservation efforts for these archaeological resources and emphasizes the importance of public education in continuing these efforts.
