    62nd Annual Meeting of the Illinois Archaeological Survey -- Call for Presentations.


    September 14-15, 2018, Hilton Garden Inn, 1501 S. Neil Street, Champaign.


    The 62nd Annual Meeting of the Illinois Archaeological Survey convenes on September 14-15, and it is our State of Illinois Bicentennial year!


    The paper and poster sessions on Saturday, September 15, will include current research and presentations on more specialized topics in prehistoric and historical archaeology.  Paper presentations should be 15 minutes in length. Poster presentations will be displayed throughout the day.


    A food and drinks reception will meet on the evening of the 14th at an attractive location in Urbana-Champaign, and our Annual Business Meeting will convene at the Hilton Garden Inn on the 15th.


    Please send your proposed titles and abstracts (up to 200 words) for papers or posters to Chris Fennell (cfennell@illinois.edu) by August 10, 2018.  All topics are welcome, and subjects engaging with a theme of the Bicentennial are greatly appreciated.


    Accommodations can be reserved with the Hilton Garden Inn (link) or other local hotels. Reserve with the Hilton by August 15 for a rate of $102 per night.


    This conference is hosted by: Department of Anthropology, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; Illinois State Archaeological Survey; Public Service Archaeology & Architecture Program; Anthropology Program, Department of Social Sciences, Parkland College; and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer Research and Development Center, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory.

    Call for Papers – Do you have a unique way of teaching people about the past?  Have you used social media to successfully promote a project or program?  We want to hear about it!  The Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA) invites you to submit abstracts for a one-day conference to kick off Indiana Archaeology Month.  We hope you will join us at this year’s Indiana Public Archaeology Symposium on August 25, 2018, at the Glenn A Black Laboratory of Archaeology, Indiana University, Bloomington. 

    This event will be held in conjunction with the Indiana Archaeology Council’s annual workshop.  We are also accepting abstracts from professionals in the field for recent archaeological achievements and interesting research projects in the state of Indiana. 

    Abstracts are due August 1, 2018 and should be submitted to rsharkey@dnr.in.gov.  More conference information will be announced shortly.

    The IAS is soliciting submissions for the 13th Annual Jeanette E. Stephens Student Paper Awards. This paper competition is for undergraduate and graduate student research concerning Illinois archeology. The prize includes $250, books, and journals. The submission deadline is July 15, 2018.

    Call for Papers and Proposals for Teacher Workshops

    20th Annual Conference on Illinois History


    October 4 & 5, 2018

    Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library

    Springfield  


    The Conference on Illinois History is accepting paper or panel proposals on any aspect of Illinois’s history, culture, politics, geography, or archaeology. The Conference especially welcomes submissions exploring the upcoming bicentennial of statehood. We encourage submissions from professional and avocational historians, graduate students, and those engaged in the study of Illinois history at libraries, historic sites, museums, and historical societies.  


    Proposals are also being accepted for teacher workshops. If you are a teacher who has created an innovative, comprehensive, or timely curriculum on an aspect of Illinois’s history, culture, politics, geography, or archaeology, please share your expertise with other teachers at the conference.  

    The deadline for proposals is May 1, 2018.  


    To submit your proposal for a paper, panel, or teacher workshop, please send: 

    • A one-page summary of the topic, including a description of the major primary and secondary sources used. 
    • A one-page resume for each participant.

    2018 Permanent Fund Grants

    Illinois Association for Advancement Archaeology (IAAA)


    The IAAA Permanent Fund has been awarding annual research assistance grants since 2004. These grants are open to avocational, professional, student, and educational groups for projects conducted within the state of Illinois. In 2018, the IAAA Permanent Fund will award two $400 grants. The deadline for grant applications is Monday, January 15, 2018. The application form as well as guidelines and requirements for a grant are available on the IAAA website under the Permanent Fund link (www.museum.state.il.us/iaaa).

    The Midwest Archaeological Conference has announced a new initiative for publishing opportunities. Attached please find an announcement for the MAC/UND Press Dissertation Prize.     The Saturday (September 16) paper session will consist of a combination of current research papers in the morning followed by presentations on more specialized topics in prehistoric and historical archaeology in the afternoon. Paper lengths are 15 minutes.

    Poster presentations will be displayed outside the SIU Museum  Auditorium rotunda throughout the day.
