    The Field Museum has posted a 1-year fellowship starting in early 2025. Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the fellowship is designed specifically for recent Native American graduates with lived cultural experience who are interested in careers in museum collections management, with opportunities for further study in registration and conservation. Fellows will be provided mentorship by staff on pursuing a career with a focus of their choosing in museums and will be introduced to other professionals in the field. The fellow would work with other 1 to 2 fellows.

    The Illinois State Archaeological Survey in Partnership with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County is pleased to announce a summer paid internship program available to any interested Native American tribal members. This is a paid hourly position working alongside staff from ISAS as part of our First Peoples grant conducting survey and research in the Cook County Forest Preserves.  No experience necessary. 

    • Summer Cultural Preservation Internship Opportunity

      The Illinois State Archaeological Survey in partnership with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County is pleased to announce paid summer internships available to interested Tribal members. These paid positions ($15.30/hr) are available for 2-8 week periods, depending on interested individuals availability. Work will involve moderate physical exertion outdoors under sometimes challenging conditions.

      This is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in:

    • ·      working outdoors with a team of dedicated heritage preservation specialists,
    • ·      helping to identify, protect, and preserve sensitive cultural resources within more than 11,000 acres of Forest Preserve lands,
    • ·      learning to identify cultural artifacts and sites,
    • ·      helping us report cultural sites according to the laws and regulations that protect public lands,
    • ·      seeing how GPS, GIS, and other technology is used in the course of survey and reporting,

    No experience necessary, must be 18 years of age. Work will be conducted in Cook County, and lodging, per diem, or transportation is not available.

    The Illinois State Archaeological Survey is seeking to hire Archaeological Field Technicians (Academic Hourly Assistants) to serve as excavators and surveyors capable of performing basic archaeological identification, interpretation, and recordation tasks under the direct supervision of a Research Archaeologist. Duties include, but are not limited to, participation in Phase I field surveys, Phase II site testing, Phase III archaeological mitigation projects, and associated analysis activities based at the ISAS Northern Illinois Field Station in Elgin, Illinois. These are full-time (40 hours per week), non-benefits eligible, field/laboratory positions with an hourly rate of $16 to $18 depending on qualifications.

    ISAS is seeking to hire a Scientific Specialist, Historic Architecture (up to 2 depending on applicant pool and programmatic need) to conduct historical research on architectural and archaeological resources (standing buildings and architectural structural remains encountered during archaeological investigations) encountered during investigations for Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS) and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to identify and evaluate those eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places in accordance with the rules and regulations of the National Historic Preservation Act (16 U.S.C. 470) and its implementing regulations (36 CFR 61, Appendix A) and the Illinois State Agency Historic Resources Preservation Act (20 ILCS 3420).   Position will be based in either Champaign or Jacksonville, Illinois.

    FEMA is hiring an SOI Archaeologist for the Chicago Region 5 Office.

    The ideal candidate will have technical expertise in archaeology and the education and experience credentials to submit formal Section 106 consultations to State Historic Preservation Offices. Candidates should also have the education and experience required to gain access to privileged archaeology databases in the Region 5 States. The position is based in Chicago, IL and requires some travel to declared disasters within FEMA Region 5 and occasional travel outside of FEMA Region 5.
