Commonwealth Cultural Resources Group, Inc. (CCRG) desires to fill the position of Project Principal Investigator/Project Archaeologist. The position will be located in our Milwaukee, Wisconsin office or the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. This position requires experience in conducting Phase I surveys, Phase II evaluations, and Phase III data recoveries, as well as a solid understanding of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Register of Historic Places evaluation of historic properties. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a M.A. (Ph.D. preferred) in anthropology/archaeology, or historic preservation.

This position will be responsible for supervisory and project management of CRM projects. The position will conduct, oversee, and direct archaeological research and field investigations designed to identify NRHP-eligible historic properties. Work will involve the following responsibilities: directing Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III investigations; permitting and excavating human burials in accordance with state and federal statues; preparing and reviewing archaeological reports; designing and administering archaeological databases; hiring and supervising archaeological field and lab personnel; participating in professional organizations and meetings; preparing publications; and serving as a liason to the public, government officials and clients. This position will include proposal-writing and new business development.

This position requires expert knowledge of the Section 106 and NEPA process and the ability to prepare well organized, thorough CRM documents is essential. Experience with large linear projects, including pipelines, and the Archaeological Resource Protection Act and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission CRM procedure is essential. Knowledge of computers, databases, GPS, and GIS is important. Areas of analytical expertise are open, but demonstrated ability to conduct artifact analyses and write key sections of reports (methods, results, artifact analyses) is a must.

Archaeobotanist
Academic Hourly Position
Illinois State Archaeological Survey, Prairie Research Institute

Primary Position Function/Summary
Conduct analysis of plant remains from archaeological sites including all aspects of archaeobotanical sample collection, identification, analysis, archaeological interpretation, report preparation, and curation.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
Perform the identification and recordation of carbonized plant remains from archaeological sites, including the quantification of results and preparation of appropriate tables, the analysis and interpretation of the archaeological significance of the archaeobotanical remains, and the preparation of archaeobotanical reports as appropriate.  Maintain electronic and handwritten archaeobotanical laboratory databases, including, but not limited to the floatation sample number log, the radiocarbon date results database, and the Laboratory Tracking Form.  Track samples through the analytic process by inventorying the movement of samples through the laboratory, maintain electronic logs of individual site samples, and ensure the analyzed floatation samples are curated properly.  Undertake general laboratory duties, such as order supplies, organize storage shelves, help to maintain comparative collections, and sample cleaning and maintenance as needed.  Supervise and/or train other staff members, archaeological assistants, lab technicians, and students in processing data and conducting analytical procedures and techniques.

Position Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Minimum B.A., M.A. preferred, in Anthropology or related discipline with 3 years experience in archaeobotany working with a qualified paleoethnobotanist.

Experience:  Must have experience in identifying and quantifying archaeobotanical data sets, and a demonstrated ability to complete archaeobotanical projects and reports in a timely and competent manner. Basic familiarity with computer word-processing, graphic, and database programs required.  Must have a basic familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeological culture history and Illinois archaeological culture history. Knowledge of midwestern plant communities and ecology, plant anatomy, taxonomy, paleoecology, and native plant utilization is useful.

This position is currently a full-time Academic Hourly with no benefits, however, a full-time, benefit’s eligible position may be created at some future date.  Hourly rate based on experience.  Position open until filled.

The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is seeking a Cultural Resources Coordinator for the Statewide Survey based in Champaign, Illinois. The Cultural Resources Coordinator (CRC) serves as day-to-day point of contact between the Illinois State Archaeological Survey’s (ISAS) Statewide Survey and the Cultural Resources Unit at the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and assists in IDOT coordination with federal and state agencies and tribes on applicable transportation-related compliance issues.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in anthropology, archaeology, historic preservation, or a closely related field, plus a minimum of five years of relevant field, analytical, and laboratory experience in a CRM and/or transportation archaeology context.  Applicants should have a working knowledge of Eastern Woodlands prehistoric and historic archaeology, a basic familiarity with Federal and Illinois historic and burial laws, administrative experience in personnel organization and management, as well as a demonstrated ability to oversee projects to ensure compliance with applicable legislation and procedures. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of Lithic Analyst, participates in the analysis of lithic materials from archaeological investigations and prepares reports for compliance submissions meeting professional and regulatory standards as well as for publication. Carries out research goals and analysis parameters on projects. Maintain electronic and handwritten lithic laboratory databases. Assist in maintaining the Lithics Laboratory comparative collections and in preparing lithic collections for curation. Conducts database analysis via computer software and excel worksheets. Assists in ISAS engagement activities for the general public, avocational societies and school groups and the recording of private collections as appropriate

Position Requirements and Qualifications: B.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field and 6 months experience in the inventorying, identifying, and analyzing lithic assemblages.

Experience and Knowledge: Minimum of two-year’s field and laboratory experience on prehistoric sites in the Eastern Woodlands cultural area. General familiarity with geological resources of northern mid-continent, classes of lithic materials, lithic research protocols, diagnostic lithic forms, tool production technology, and use wear traits. Demonstrated ability to complete reports in a timely and competent manner in a team setting. Must have basic familiarity with computer word processing, graphic, and database programs. Requires a basic familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeological culture history.
