The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), Prairie Research Institute (PRI), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is seeking a quarter-time Visiting Archaeometry Research Specialist for its Killarney Research Annex, located in Urbana, Illinois. This individual will work with the Associate Director, Ancient Technologies and Archaeological Materials (ATAM) program, and other staff in providing technical expertise and research support in the interpretation and presentation of archaeometric data related to the investigation of archaeological materials for the Illinois State Archaeological Survey. Associated duties will include providing technical expertise and research support in the interpretation and presentation of archaeometric data related to investigations of archaeological materials. This includes laboratory work involving collagen extraction and apatite purification for stable isotope analysis and operation of isotope mass spectrometer (elemental analyzer, Kiel device); the presentation and interpretation of archaeometric isotope data; and collaboration with senior researchers on technical and research reports, and other presentations and professional publications associated with disseminating research results. The Visiting Archaeometry Research Specialist will provide management and oversight of archaeometric analyses and will supervise assigned staff; this includes task assignments, training, scheduling, performance monitoring and evaluation, position/career mentoring, and leave/travel approval.

The successful candidate must have a B.A./B.S. in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field; plus, archaeological field and laboratory experience in North America. Must have a minimum of seven years’ experience in the analysis, interpretation and presentation of isotope data—including demonstrated proficiency in collagen extraction and apatite purification for stable isotope analysis, operation of isotope mass spectrometer (elemental analyzer, Kiel device). Technical training, experience with lab procedures, equipment, and relevant software is required. Must have knowledge of archaeometric techniques with an emphasis on isotope and elemental analyses, and have documented experience in interpreting and presenting results of isotopic analysis in professional contexts and publications. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively with a professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, under minimal supervision. Must possess effective communication, organizational, interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills. Attention to detail and accuracy is critical. Familiarity with Midwestern archaeological chronology, material culture, cultural history and research agendas. Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, Photoshop, Powerpoint, FileMaker, DataGraph, as well as other commonly employed databases and software.

This is a Visiting Academic Professional position but could become non-visiting, in the future, contingent on funding and Survey needs. Salary is negotiable based on experience. Associated duties will include performing GIS spatial analysis and remodeling relating to archaeological research. Manipulate data to create information products to meet the Survey’s specific needs. Perform complex archaeological and spatial analysis using ArcGIS. Prepare metadata and document GIS workflows.

The successful candidate must have a B.A., M.A. preferred, in Anthropology, Geography, or closely related field, plus two years’ experience performing GIS-related spatial analysis. Experience working with spatial information. Experience working with GIS data to conduct complex spatial analysis, generate maps, create vector and raster output, create map layouts and views, and generate maps and reports. Demonstrated proficiency with ArcGIS software. Ability to read and use maps. Ability to perform repetitive tasks with great attention to detail and accuracy. Working familiarity with existing methodology of archaeological site location modeling. Demonstrated proficiency with SQL. Demonstrated proficiency with FileMaker Database application. This individual will provide technical expertise and research support in the collection, analysis and interpretation of cultural resource information related to architecture, historical documents, and archaeological materials, under the direction of the Assistant Director of Statewide Surveys. Associated duties will include collecting multiple kinds of cultural resource documentation required for IDOT project compliance with federal and state historic preservation laws, federal guidelines, and existing Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)/IDOT Memoranda of Agreements (MOA) and Programmatic Agreements (PA). Evaluate and assemble required cultural resources information, prepare interpretative narratives, statistical summaries, and relevant graphic and photographic images to transmit to other specialists for incorporation into legal documentation required by agencies to comply with federal and state cultural resources statutes. Create, edit and submit independently authored reports including federal and state mandated architectural, historical, and archaeological survey and evaluation documents, as well as prepare mandated federal and state reports of those cultural resources activities. Prepare and provide Geographic Information Systems data as required. Conduct historic archival research as directed. Supervise and/or train other staff members in historical and architectural cultural resource documentation.

The successful candidate must have an M.A. in Archaeology, Historic Preservation, or Preservation Administration, or closely related field, plus a minimum of 3 years of cultural resources field and lab experience, including experience documenting architectural, historical, and archaeological resources in the Midwest. Experience in creating compliance documents for projects under federal and state historic preservation laws and regulations. Familiarity with Phase I, II, and III archaeological field procedures. Familiarity with collecting and evaluating historical architectural data and associated historical documentation. Demonstrated ability for working with maps such as USGS quadrangle maps, in a team setting. Proficiency with commonly employed computer word processing, graphic, and database programs, as well as GIS programs. Needs to have effective personal relations, communication, organizational, and leadership skills, and an attention to detail. A demonstrated ability to perform with a professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, with minimal supervision.

This individual will work with the Special Projects Coordinator and other staff in conducting analysis of stone items from archaeological sites. Associated duties will include all aspects of lithic sample collection, identification, analysis, archaeological interpretation, report preparation, and curation.

The Lithic Analyst will perform the identification and recordation of chipped, groundstone, and mineral remains from archaeological sites, including the quantification of results and preparation of appropriate tables, analysis and interpretation of the archaeological significance of the lithic remains, and the preparation of lithic analysis reports as appropriate. Execute holistic spatial analysis incorporating vertical and horizontal distribution of diagnostic lithic artifacts. Maintain electronic and handwritten lithic laboratory databases, including but not limited to, a lithic lab project-tracking database, a raw material comparative collection database, an artifact type comparative collection database, and individual site assemblage lithic analysis database. Track samples through the analytical process by inventorying the movement of samples through the laboratory, maintaining electronic logs of individual site samples, and ensuring the analyzed samples are curated properly. Coordinate with archaeological researchers to facilitate specimen identification and interpretations, within the larger context of prehistoric and historic cultural manifestations recognized in the Eastern Woodlands region. Participate in Survey outreach activities for the general public, avocational societies, and school groups, and record and maintain artifact data collected from avocational collectors. Serve as liaison with other lithic specialists in the state and nationwide. Participate in regional conferences and organizations. Prepare scientific presentations on research activities and interests.

The successful candidate must have a B.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field, plus a minimum of 3 year’s experience conducting lithic investigations at prehistoric sites in the Eastern Woodlands cultural area. A detailed familiarity with the geological resources of Illinois, temporo-culturally diagnostic lithics, tool production technology, and usewear traits. A demonstrated ability to complete projects and reports in a timely and competent manner is required. Candidate should possess a detailed familiarity with lithic resources and technology of the Eastern Woodlands, and basic familiarity with lithic research protocols and agendas. Basic familiarity with all classes of material culture, feature types, and functions, and geomorphology is also required.
