    The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) -St. Louis District- is in the process of consolidating their collections, and is looking for an intern to assist in the process. It would be an ORISE internship position, and the salary is dependent on the candidate's educational background and level of experience. The individual would be assisting with the regionalization effort. They would have to live in the vicinity or be willing to relocate to St. Louis and have the following skillset/experience:

    1. Curation and Collections Management Experience
    2. Writing and Organizational Skills
    3. Proficient in Microsoft Access and Excel
    4. Experience with GIS (optional)

    Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites applications for the position of Curator, Center for Archaeological Investigations (Associate or Senior Scientist, 12 month, 50% FTE, A/P appointment), and Associate or Full Professor, Department of Anthropology (9 month, 50% FTE tenured faculty appointment). Applicants must have a PhD in Anthropology or a closely related field with a research focus in Archaeology or allied field. Must have academic qualifications consistent with appointment in the Department of Anthropology at the rank of associate professor with tenure or professor with tenure. Area and topical specialties are open, but preference is for New World and specialties that complement those of the existing department members; both historic and prehistoric archaeologists are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have the ability to contribute to the Anthropology Department’s four-field undergraduate and graduate programs via active teaching, research, student mentoring, and public outreach programs on the SIUC campus, within the local community, and on social media. College or University-level teaching experience strongly preferred. Applicants must have demonstrated curatorial experience including but not limited to the supervision and training of graduate student assistants, undergraduate student workers, and other employees in the analysis and curation of archaeological materials and records. Applicants must have a demonstrated record of successfully obtaining and completing grant and contract-funded research projects in a university, museum, government agency, or CRM setting with a commensurate record of report and peer-reviewed publications. Applicants must have strong leadership qualities, administrative expertise, and the ability to foster collaborations between the CAI and the other units within and beyond the University.     The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), Prairie Research Institute (PRI), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is seeking a Lithic Analyst for its Central Illinois office located in Champaign, Illinois. This individual will work with the Special Projects Coordinator and other staff in conducting analysis of stone items from archaeological sites. Associated duties will include all aspects of lithic sample collection, identification, analysis, archaeological interpretation, report preparation, and curation.

     

    The Lithic Analyst will perform the identification and recordation of chipped, groundstone, and mineral remains from archaeological sites, including the quantification of results and preparation of appropriate tables, analysis and interpretation of the archaeological significance of the lithic remains, and the preparation of lithic analysis reports as appropriate. Execute holistic spatial analysis incorporating vertical and horizontal distribution of diagnostic lithic artifacts. Maintain electronic and handwritten lithic laboratory databases, including but not limited to, a lithic lab project-tracking database, a raw material comparative collection database, an artifact type comparative collection database, and individual site assemblage lithic analysis database. Track samples through the analytical process by inventorying the movement of samples through the laboratory, maintaining electronic logs of individual site samples, and ensuring the analyzed samples are curated properly. Coordinate with archaeological researchers to facilitate specimen identification and interpretations, within the larger context of prehistoric and historic cultural manifestations recognized in the Eastern Woodlands region. Participate in Survey outreach activities for the general public, avocational societies, and school groups, and record and maintain artifact data collected from avocational collectors. Serve as liaison with other lithic specialists in the state and nationwide. Participate in regional conferences and organizations. Prepare scientific presentations on research activities and interests.

     

    The successful candidate must have a B.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field, plus a minimum of 3 year’s experience conducting lithic investigations at prehistoric sites in the Eastern Woodlands cultural area. A detailed familiarity with the geological resources of Illinois, temporo-culturally diagnostic lithics, tool production technology, and usewear traits. A demonstrated ability to complete projects and reports in a timely and competent manner is required. Candidate should possess a detailed familiarity with lithic resources and technology of the Eastern Woodlands, and basic familiarity with lithic research protocols and agendas. Basic familiarity with all classes of material culture, feature types, and functions, and geomorphology is also required. Attention to detail, and effective communication, personal relations, organizational, and teamwork skills. Candidate should be proficient with commonly employed software and database programs. Ability to perform effectively in a professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, with minimal supervision.

    The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, is seeking a Visiting Research Archaeologist for its Central Illinois office located in Champaign, Illinois. This individual will work with the Senior Research Archaeologist at the Central Office, and other staff in performing archaeological studies for transportation projects. Associated duties will include planning, conducting and supervising archaeological surveys, testing and excavations, archaeological analysis of recovered data, and preparing archaeological research reports meeting state and federal standards. Serves in a leadership capacity, as needed, functioning as a project director, site supervisor, or section leader with responsibility for supervision of lower-level professional and technical staff. 


    The successful candidate must have an M.A. in anthropology, archaeology or closely related field, plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant field experience in conducting archaeological field and laboratory investigations in the Eastern Woodlands cultural area. A demonstrated ability to complete projects and reports in a timely and competent manner and a basic familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeological cultural history, Illinois archaeological cultural history and research agendas. A basic familiarity with Federal and State of Illinois historic preservation and burial laws and regulations is required. Effective personal relations, communication, organizational, and leadership skills, and attention to detail. A demonstrated ability to perform with a professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, with minimal supervision. Proficiency with commonly-employed software and database programs. Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated archaeological excavation and analysis experience in transportation archaeology. Individual must have a valid driver’s license. Projects are located throughout the state of Illinois, and travel to and from archaeological sites, including some overnight stays, is required.

    Collections Specialist – Bioanthropologist for North American Human Remains

    The Anthropology Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Biological Anthropology beginning fall semester 2017. Applicants must have expertise in both bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology.  

    Requirements of the position are that the candidate demonstrates an active research program in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology.  The successful candidate will be able to teach a 2-2 course load of introductory courses in biological anthropology, elective undergraduate courses, and graduate courses in areas of specialization. This responsibility includes the acquisition of funds, managing of personnel, budgets, policy, and administration as well as key decisions for programmatic archaeological and administrative policy. Serve as a primary advisor to the director in the areas of archaeological research projects regarding project development, supervision, and policy-making. Seek external funding to promote the Survey and the Prairie Research Institute research agenda. Assist in the management of Survey resources, organization of staff functions, and setting Survey operating policies. Coordinate and facilitate organizational, financial, programming, and physical planning of archaeological research projects. Provide the Director with authoritative, detailed archaeological knowledge and advice related to the acquisition and performance of research project programs. Direct responsibility for Survey research project administration, management, and policy for both on-campus and off-campus facilities. Act as liaison for Survey with funding agencies, government agencies, the University, and the public. Serve as research manager for archaeological research projects to ensure required reports are completed in a professional and timely manner. May, in the Director's absence, assume primary responsibility in the day-to-day operation of the Survey. 


    The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in anthropology, archaeology or a closely related field and a minimum of ten years of professional experience plus relevant field experience in transportation archaeology, scientific and technical knowledge in Eastern Woodlands archaeology, a basic familiarity with Federal and Illinois historic and burial laws, administrative experience in personnel, facilities, and budget management, as well as a demonstrated ability to manage large-scale research projects and to bring them to closure in a timely and competent manner. This individual must have a demonstrated ability to successfully obtain external funding as well as a strong record of professional publication. Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated archaeological excavation and analysis experience in Illinois archaeological sites. Must have a basic familiarity with computer word processing, graphic, and database programs. This is a quarter-time Academic Professional position. However, it may become full-time at a future date.
