    of the Illinois Archaeological Survey

    The Saturday (September 16) paper session will consist of a combination of current research papers in the morning followed by presentations on more specialized topics in prehistoric and historical archaeology in the afternoon. Paper lengths are 15 minutes.

    Poster presentations will be displayed outside the SIU Museum  Auditorium rotunda throughout the day.

    Deadline for Submissions: September 8 (Friday), 2017

    Nick Klobuchar, who has managed the site files for many years, has retired. His replacement is Erich Shroeder from the Illinois State Museum. Erich has been working with Nick for several months and is very familiar with the site file system so the transition should be seamless.     Have a student who is interested in trying their hand at archaeology? This is a field school class offered this summer through Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois.     Midewin National Tallgrass Forest is looking for volunteers to help with excavations at the 

    Grant Creek Huber Phase Site in northcentral Illinois.

    Dates: 17 July-August 11 

    They are looking for one week volunteer commitment minimum during the four weeks of excavations. We’re soliciting for 8 volunteers through Passport in Time: http://www.passportintime.com/excavations-middle-grant-creek-2017.html

    Utica College’s 14th annual Forensic Anthropology Field School program and six-credit course will take place in Albania, Greece, and Romania from May 16 to June 8, 2017 (www.utica.edu/butrint). Over 150 students from more than 65 US and international schools have participated in the program since 2004.  No previous experience with human skeletal remains is needed and students are not required to enroll in the course to participate. Undergraduates and graduate students may choose to enroll for the six credits at the reduced tuition of $900. Check out the flyer here.

    The Illinois State Archaeological Survey is pleased to announce that its 2016 Annual Report is now available.


    This year, ISAS has introduced an new, interactive online version of the Annual Report. It may be viewed at http://go.isas.illinois.edu/annualreport2016.


    Please note that the report is best viewed on desktop browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Internet Explorer. While the report can viewed on mobile devices, the interactivity will be limited.

    Deadline for applications - April 15, 2017

    The Center for American Archeology (CAA), Kampsville, IL, invites applications for four Women in Archeology Internship positions for the 2017 field season, June 4 – August 12. This internship is for women undergraduates, graduate students, and archaeologists in the early stages of their careers with at least six weeks of field and laboratory experience. Applicants who have completed four consecutive weeks of the CAA’s Adult Field School will also be considered. Individuals interested in public archaeology, museum education, and other closely related fields are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will be team-players with a strong work ethic, communication skills, and a passion for archaeology and engaging students and the public. For more information please go to:

    The IAAA Permanent Fund has been in existence since 2000 and has awarded annual research assistance grants since 2004. These grants are open to avocational, professional, student, and educational groups for projects conducted within the state of Illinois. In 2017, the IAAA Permanent Fund will award two $400 grants. The deadline for grant applications is Sunday, January 15, 2017. The application form as well as guidelines and requirements for a grant are available on the IAAA website under the Permanent Fund link (www.museum.state.il.us/iaaa).
