    Archaeological Data Specialist

    Illinois State Archaeological Survey, Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois

    Position: Academic Hourly

    Salary: $15 per hour / Hours per week negotiable, maximum of 40 hours per week

    Availability: As soon as possible

    Primary Function of Position: Entry-level position. Maintain and ensure the integrity and security of databases; review data to be entered into a database to ensure accuracy and integrity of data; design, develop, and maintain databases; develop means to access data via web and GIS.

    Duties & Responsibilities: Develop online archaeological databases for users to access, download and display data from a variety of data formats and networks. Ensure quality and accessibility of archaeological data; support and maintain databases and access to databases via web interface and other applications

    Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Background in anthropology, the physical/natural sciences, or library science preferred; knowledge of web design/development; English language (spoken and written); ability to both work independently and as part of a small group; ability to manage time/multitask

    Knowledge & Experience:
    SQL databases management and operation (PostgreSQL or MS SQLServer)
    Web design (html, other programming/scripting languages)
    GIS (ESRI)
    Midwestern archaeology/history (or other natural science) preferred
    Experience in mixed Windows and Macintosh environment
    Experience with FileMaker Pro
    Self-motivated
    Part of a small diverse team
    Effective communicator (both written and verbal) and problem solver

    Environmental Demands: The work of this position takes place in an office setting. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time working at a computer, using a keyboard and mouse, and using repetitive hand motions.

    Senior Research Archaeologist, Special Projects, Central Office, Champaign, IL

    Illinois State Archaeological Survey, Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois

    The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), a Division of the Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is seeking a Senior Research Archaeologist for the Special Projects Division based in Champaign, Illinois. Senior Research Archaeologists interact with staff as they carry out analyses of archaeological data and the preparation of reports of archaeological research meeting professional and regulatory standards. This individual oversees, as well as performs, archaeological analyses and coordinates, as necessary, the various specialists to create a final report and/or publication. May serve in a leadership capacity functioning as a project director, section leader, or be delegated to act in place of the Special Projects Assistant or Associate Directors.

    The successful candidate must have an MA (PhD preferred), in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field, plus a minimum of five years of relevant field, analytical, and laboratory experience in Eastern Woodlands archaeology (experience in CRM and/or transportation archaeology preferred), scientific and technical knowledge of Eastern Woodlands prehistoric and historic archaeology, a basic familiarity with Federal and Illinois historic and burial laws, administrative experience in personnel, and facilities management, as well as a demonstrated ability to manage research projects, analyses, and report preparation in a team setting and to bring them to closure in a timely and competent manner. Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated archaeological excavation, analysis, and publication experience in Midwestern prehistoric and historic archaeological sites. Must have a basic familiarity with computer word processing, graphic, and database programs. This is an academic professional position. Salary is negotiable based on experience. Proposed starting date to be negotiated.

    Assistant Lithic Analyst, ISAS Central Office, Champaign, IL

    Primary Position Function/Summary: Conduct and complete lithic analyses and report preparation in Central Office in Champaign.

    Position: Academic Hourly (rate negotiable). Position may become permanent, benefits-eligible if funding becomes available.

    Major Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of Lithic Analyst, participates in the analysis of lithic materials from archaeological investigations and prepares reports for compliance submissions meeting professional and regulatory standards as well as for publication. Carries out research goals and analysis parameters on projects. Maintain electronic and handwritten lithic laboratory databases. Assist in maintaining the Lithics Laboratory comparative collections and in preparing lithic collections for curation. Conducts database analysis via computer software and excel worksheets. Assists in ISAS engagement activities for the general public, avocational societies and school groups and the recording of private collections as appropriate

    Position Requirements and Qualifications: B.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field and 6 months experience in the inventorying, identifying, and analyzing lithic assemblages.

    Experience and Knowledge: Minimum of two-year’s field and laboratory experience on prehistoric sites in the Eastern Woodlands cultural area. General familiarity with geological resources of northern mid-continent, classes of lithic materials, lithic research protocols, diagnostic lithic forms, tool production technology, and use wear traits. Demonstrated ability to complete reports in a timely and competent manner in a team setting. Must have basic familiarity with computer word processing, graphic, and database programs. Requires a basic familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeological culture history.
